When Gordon Murray designed the McLaren F1 road car, his uncompromising approach to weight reduction extended to every component, including the bespoke hi-fi system and the vehicle’s toolkit.
Produced exclusively for McLaren by the French company Facom, the F1’s remarkable toolkit embodied the same engineering philosophy as the car itself, with obsessive attention to detail and an uncompromising focus on minimising weight. Each tool was manufactured from aerospace-grade titanium, with the exception of the steel pliers, and finished with a distinctive gold-coloured titanium nitride coating. The finish echoed the 24-carat gold heat shielding used throughout the F1’s engine bay.
This complete five-piece spanner set represents one of the rarest and most significant toolkits ever supplied with a production automobile. With only 64 McLaren F1 road cars produced, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce and rarely offered for sale.
This particular toolkit was originally issued with an F1 that subsequently suffered a fire. The toolkit remained in the car at the time of the incident, resulting in fire damage to the leather tool roll and the screwdriver bits. These signs of use and survival form part of the set’s unique history and provenance.
Complete with the matching gold-finished pliers, this is an exceptionally rare and highly desirable collector’s piece, offering a unique opportunity to acquire one of the most distinctive accessories ever created for the McLaren F1.
